Summary

Laia and Keenan set up camp at the cave outside of Kauf, where they find Elias’s things. However, they are soon ambushed by Helene, who appears at the mouth of the cave. Meanwhile, still captive in Kauf Prison, Elias experiences another seizure and is again transported to the Waiting Place. He meets Izzi and walks with her through the Waiting Place, helping her emotionally move on into the afterlife. After a week of torture in the prison, Elias escapes by pretending to be unconscious, then disarming a guard. He breaks into Darin’s cell, and the two have a whispered conversation in which Elias discovers that the Warden has only interrogated Darin about Laia – he has not asked about Darin’s ability to make special steel.
