Summary
A Torch Against the Night is the second book in the Ember in the Ashes series. It focuses on the protagonists from the first book in the series, An Ember in the Ashes. Elias is a former Mask, an elite soldier sworn to protect the Martial Empire. Laia is a former slave, a member of the Scholars, who are being persecuted by those in the Empire. In the previous book in the series, Elias and Laia became extremely close. Elias was supposed to compete in a series of Trials to become the new Emperor, but changed his mind and fled the city with Laia. Laia’s brother, Darin, was also captured and trapped in a Martial prison because of his ability to forge a supernaturally powerful form of steel that threatens the Empire.
