Raja
Raja is the stage name given to the tiger who narrates A Tiger for Malgudi. It is given to him by Captain, when he makes him a part of his circus.
Raja develops over the course of the novel from being a wild and ferocious beast to being a calm, contemplative, and meditative animal. He achieves this spiritual transformation through his experiences of human life, but especially through meeting the Master, an enigmatic mystic who teaches him lessons about his self and the universe.
In youth, Raja is an independent, self-assertive, and arrogant creature, who considers himself "Supreme Ruler of the Jungle" and the lord of all he sees. As he grows older he is increasingly humbled, as he is first almost killed by a female tiger, then suffers the loss of his family to human hunters, and is finally captured by Captain and made to perform.
