Hydra
Most of the book is set on the Greek island of Hydra in Erica’s present tense narration. Before she moves there, Erica thinks of Hydra as an ideal bohemia where artists can go to live in leisure and scenic beauty as they paint, write, and otherwise create art. Erica’s first few weeks on Hydra conform to her preconception of it, but relatively soon in the novel, her preconceptions become unfounded. In fact, one of the first comments Erica makes about Hydra (in the past tense Prelude) is that “the monstrous Hydra is doorman to the Underworld” (3). The tone of this comment characterizes most of Erica’s evolving impression of the island as the novel progresses. On Hydra, Erica’s relationship with Jimmy ends in his infidelity, Charmian’s artistic pursuits are stymied by her devotion to George, and all of Marianne’s efforts are directed towards...
