Summary

Chapter 16

Will continues to watch The Owner, unaware that what he has in his room are stolen Talents. Will sees that The Owner does have Will’s mother's missing hairpin. This angers Will, who leaps into the room and steals the hairpin away from The Owner.

Chapter 17

Toby returns home to see Cady. He enjoys the cake that she has made. She starts asking him questions, and he reveals that he used to travel. He almost tells her about Africa, but stops. He reveals to the readers that he went to Africa to get married and celebrate the birth of his child, but he once again implies something bad had happened. He wants to leave the emporium, but Cady seems very happy there, which is reason enough for Toby to stay.
