Point of View

The novel is written in third person from an omniscient perspective, though the majority of the novel focuses on Brystal Evergreen, one of the novel's main characters who becomes the leader of a group of magicians and the heroine. The novel opens with a prologue that introduces Madame Celeste Weatherberry, two of her apprentices, and King Champion of the Southern Kingdom.

Beginning in Chapter 1, the reader learns about Brystal Evergreen, a girl who lives in the Southern Kingdom and who chafes under the restrictions placed on girls. Over then next several chapters, the story line is focused on Brystal and those with whom she interacts. Madame Weatherberry does not appear again for several chapters and the reader has no idea what she has been doing in the meanwhile.
