Summary
In Chapter 4, Holmes told Watson that he has made up his mind about the case, but would like to speak with the policeman John Rance anyway. Watson and Holmes left to visit Rance, the constable who had first found the dead body inside of the house at 3, Lauriston Gardens. Holmes paid Rance to tell him about what happened the previous night when he had discovered the body. Rance gave his account, and also mentioned that he saw a drunken man outside that night. When Holmes asked for a description, Rance described him as tall and with a red face. Those were the same features as what Holmes had deduced about murderer.
Holmes was upset that the policeman, Rance, had not realized that the man outside was the criminal. Then he and Watson left. Holmes was confident about the case. He was confident...
