Summary
Lakshman continues training Raju and finds the process difficult. The narrative briefly exposits upon the death of Lakshman’s father. When Laskhman and his brother Ramlal were young, a malicious neighbor set fire to the trees near Lakshman’s home. Lakshman’s father died while trying to extinguish the fire. Lakshman’s mother was already dead before then. Raju continues to grow as time passes and as Lakshman continues the training. At times, Lakshman resorts to beating Raju. Lakshman later discovers that Geeta has been accepting gifts of food from her employers, and Lakshman is angered by this, as he views it as undignified. By the summer, Lakshman manages to train Raju to dance to while Lakshman beats a drum. One day, Lakshman visits a nearby temple of the god Golu and watches a ceremonial slaughtering of goats.
