Chapters 9 - 12 Summary
Chapter 9:
The narrator explains the sources for his stories about Dean and Anne-Marie. He sees himself as a kind of collector of information. Some he gets through direct conversation; some he gets through less direct routes; some is even his own imagination. It is impossible to sort out what is what and, he says, it is in some sense not important. Dean and Anne-Marie plan a trip in Paris together. He picks her up from her house and, when she gets in, she informs him that she has told her father "everything." He told her just to be careful. When they arrive they shower together. Dean notices that she has some red blemishes on her back and assures her that they will go away if she washes enough. After the shower they have sex. Dean leaves the next day to visit...
