Spool of Blue Thread
This is the spool talked about in the title and throughout the book. It symbolizes the love of family that goes throughout the generations of Whitshanks. The color blue is significant in many places throughout the novel, but in each case it represents family. The first time blue directly involves Red and Abby is on their wedding day when they both wear blue outfits. Abby has kept this specifically colored thread in her closet for all of these years, just so it would match their wedding clothes should she ever need to mend them.
