Chapters 51 - 55 Summary
Ronald Pye is summoned by Dirk. His brother in law Dennis has a large gambling debt and Ronald reluctantly agrees to pay. He wants to sell his shares in the bank and leave, but Dirk refuses. Their bond includes the murder and he tells Ronald he wants six hundred thousand pounds as well. When Ronald refuses, he pulls out a pistol, claiming he'll take out Ronald's children if necessary, reciting a story of the deaths of ninety-six innocent people.
Mark finds snares and footprints. Twenty-two days after his exposure, malaria sets in. He hears a day owl and heard the same calls before the attack in Ladyburg. He sees a man he recognizes. He can't run, so he makes the sound of an owl, and brings one man close. Hobday shoots and Mark falls into the river, but the shot hits...
