Chapters 46 - 50 Summary
Mark heads north in peace, broken only by the sting of a Tsetse fly. His grandfather once explained that without this fly, cultivation would have taken over the land. He retraces the old man's steps searching for his final resting place. On the tenth day, he sees his first larger game but is reluctant to disturb the small herd of Impala. He thinks about how game has dwindled, and remembers grandfather telling him the great emptiness is coming.
Dirk Courtney hosts a dog-fighting event that brings out blood lust in all involved. Charles and Dirk wager ten thousand pounds. Dirk's dog wins.
