Chapters 41 - 45 Summary
Sean goes into his office and comes across the invitation he sent to Mark Anders. Disappointed, he finishes and goes out to greet his guests. Jan Smuts mentions the latest lay offs of two thousand mineworkers, and explains that the figures support the decision. When Sean presses, he admits he needs Sean's support at an upcoming meeting with the Cabinet. The workers are organizing with modern weapons. They are training, and Sean knows that the future will see the land he loves ravaged by war again. He agrees to support Smuts, and throw his regiment behind it.
Marion Littlejohn reads the letter from Mark twice, and later hurries to the shop on Main Street. She puts another half-sovereign gold piece on the counter, and then asks Miss Lucy if she can take one pair of sheets home to begin the embroidery...
