Summary

“Searching for Elijah” follows the life of a woman named Malini and her son Amar. After the death of her first husband, Neel, Malini begins dating a Jewish man named Stephen Cohen whose sweetness and aptitude with Amar’s care charms her. The relationship presents only one problem, however: Mrs. Cohen, Stephen’s mother, quietly demands that Malini convert to Judaism in order to join the family. Rather than telling Stephen, Malini agrees to privately go through with the process under Mrs. Cohen’s supervision. In the days leading up to their wedding, Malini begins to feel increasing trepidation about the prospect of conversion for herself and Amar; she begins wondering whether Neel would have found it acceptable.
