Summary
In “The Import,” a man named Raj agrees, on his mother’s request, to hire a nanny from India to look after his young son, Shay. Although Raj’s wife Bethany, a white woman, objects to leaving her son in the care of a person whose language she does not speak, she ultimately relents and the couple pick up a woman named Rupa at the airport. While Bethany toils at her journalism job, Raj enjoys the relative freedom that Rupa’s presence affords him, taking walks throughout the day and, at one point, planning to initiate an affair with a married woman named Molly Choi whom he has met while out walking. One night, however, he discovers that Rupa has a daughter in India whom she has abandoned to come take care of Shay; something about this strikes...
