Le Petit Cottage
Le Petit Cottage is the name given for the Guilbert Plantation. Sylvie, Lucien, and Byron have lived in this location for much of their lives. However, every character has some connection to the cottage, whether they are forced to work on it or are invited in some capacity. It is described as a large plantation where they are implied to grow sugar cane and are struggling to pay back their debts. This is also where Sylvie believed she buried the family’s gold for safe-keeping and where Henri was able to take it from after she tried to sell him to Cuba to keep her secret. Ultimately, Le Petite Cottage is returned to the bank at the end of the novel, ending the Guilbert legacy.
