Marguerite “Thisbe” Carver
Marguerite Carver, who is referred to as Thisbe until the very end when Le Brun asks her for her real name before freeing her. As a child, Thisbe was taken from her family by Sylvie and named Thisbe after the queen’s dog. Although Thisbe is forced to make herself invisible around Sylvie while tending to her every whim, Thisbe is very intelligent and has dreams of rejoining her family and finding her own freedom. As Thisbe spends more time with Le Brun, she develops confidence in herself and discovers her love of learning. In the end, Thisbe gains her freedom thanks to Le Brun and goes on to have a child with him, even though the two never marry.
