Summary
In Book Three: I, the narrator says that both Lucien and his father tried to get rid of the Bernardin de Maret signet ring. After Juliette married another, Sylvie sent Lucien, but he spent time travelling the world. In France, he fell for a singer and called her his wife. Meanwhile, Sylvie was relieved by the death of her husband, as she had been forced to have and lose many of his children. However, she became upset to see the singer with the signet ring. Furthermore, she learns that Lucien did not claim her vineyard. So, Sylvie convinced Lucien to take his bride to New Orleans and took the signet ring back before the singer ran away with another man.
