Motherhood
The author creates a fictional character in the form of Nicky to show that when a mother and child love each other, a mother cannot be replaced no matter how well another mother figure treats them. Emily loves Nicky. Sean feels that all of her love goes to Nicky once he is born. Stephanie feels that Emily loves Nicky and this is why she worries that something has happened to her when she does not come to pick up Nicky. Emily says that one of the reasons she devises the insurance scam scheme is to be able to spend time with Nicky. When she sees Stephanie trying to take her place, she says that Stephanie can have everything and everyone except for Nicky. Nicky realizes that his mother loves him and thus revolts against Stephanie when she no longer becomes the mother of his best friend...
