The widow wants to be around people, but she does not feel that she will be welcomed. In trying to get closer to the party, the widow separates herself even further.

The Eye

The eye symbolizes life and hope for being seen. When Maria sees the widow’s eye, Maria is not frightened by it. Instead, Maria is compelled to find out what the eye is. The widow is alive and searching for connection, and it is in this moment that the widow is finally seen.
