Point of View

The point-of-view of the novel is first person. This is important because it is such an emotional novel, and seeing the situation through Vicky's eyes helps the reader connect to everything that's happening. Vicky is a writer and poet. The rest of her family is more focused on science. Because the family is so close, Vicky talks with them and listens to their scientific conversations. While she is not innately drawn to science, she understands it. She is very observant and helps the reader understand situations, settings, and allowances through language.

The author highlights not only the Vicky's dialogue, but also her introspective thoughts. Through this, the reader understands that she might be a poet who has a love for literature and sees the world in a unique way, but she is also well grounded.
