Rosary Ring
Chika's rosary ring symbolizes the desire for faith. While in the store with the woman, Chika wonders if the woman notices the ring, and sees it as a sign that she is Christian. However, Chika later reveals that she has never really believed in any particular god. Suddenly, amidst unthinkable trauma, Chika begins playing with the rosary beads, longing for some deity to deliver her, and to return her sister.
The Woman's Scarf
The woman's scarf symbolizes grace. Initially, Chika sees the scarf not only as an obvious signifier of the woman's Islamic beliefs, but of her abject poverty. Her understanding of and relationship to the scarf mutates, however, after she sustains a wound in the street. Instead of the scolding Chika for being foolish, the woman uses the scarf to clean her wound, and then wraps it around the cut. Upon leaving, Chika asks...
