Summary

In Chapter 31, food is a constant worry and the family is sometimes hungry, though they buy some food, such as fish, and make another trip to Kobe to get butter and sugar. Hanako finds happiness in small things, such as the rice balls Baachan makes for Tadashi's birthday, but one night she becomes furious at Kiyoshi for stealing their rice. She tries to put her anger aside, but cannot. One night, Hanako talks with Tadashi. He asks if she is happy here. She loves her family but feels out of place in Japan. She asks if they can open another restaurant. Tadashi reveals that he had borrowed money to open the business in America, including some money from his parents. He had repaid the money to others, but never repaid his parents because they wanted him to use the money to provide things...
