There are many examples of strained, dysfunctional family relationships in the novel, and through these relationships, the novel explores the paradox of such relationships being necessary but often challenging. One prominent example of this dynamic is between Sachiko and Mariko. Sachiko often claims that her actions are primarily motivated by a consideration of what “would be best for my daughter” (45), and while that may be true, her decisions appear often misguided and potentially infected by more selfish desires. For example, Sachiko says that she is intent on going to America with Frank because life for Mariko would, in Sachiko’s opinion, be better in America.
