Summary
In Chapter 10, when Etsuko entered the cottage, she found Mariko there, and also a middle-aged woman whom Etsuko did not recognize. The woman introduces herself as Yasuko, Sachiko’s cousin-in-law. Yasuko then talked to Etsuko about Sachiko. Yasuko and her father had expected Sachiko to move in with them three weeks ago, but Sachiko had not contacted them in that time. Yasuko talked about how she had enjoyed having Sachiko and Mariko living with them, and that they had left due to a quarrel that was the result of a simple misunderstanding. Etsuko replied that, to her understanding, Sachiko planned to move back in with them soon. However, that evening, after Yasuko had departed the cottage and Sachiko returned, Sachiko told Etsuko that her plans had changed again.
