Marple and Craddock tell the entire backstory to everyone else. Rudi Scherz had worked for Dr. Adolf Koch in Berne. Charlotte Blacklock went to Dr. Koch to get an unbecoming goiter removed. When Charlotte and Letitia's father died, Letitia left her job to look after her sister. Before Letitia came to care for Charlotte, she had been forced to cope with her goiter rather than surgically removing it. Their father, Dr. Blacklock, was an old-fashioned man. He did not believe in the operation that Charlotte needed. When Letitia came to care for her sister, she assisted her in finally getting the surgery.
Unfortunately, Letitia died of an pneumonia, and Charlotte feared for her future. She took over her sister's identity to obtain her fortune and live the life her goiter had denied her in her youth. The...
