Craddock and Sergeant Fletcher visit Little Paddocks and interrogate Miss Blacklock and Miss Bunner in chapter five. Sergeant Fletcher informs Craddock about the difficult Mitzi as they arrive- she's uncooperative and a liar. Julia Simmons opens the door with "a bored expression" and allows the men inside. Miss Blacklock meets with them. Craddock notices that she is an attractive woman with no make-up, a surgical mark by her right ear, and plainly dressed with a Victorian flair. The only thing out of the ordinary is the vase of dead violets. Miss Bunner tells Craddock about the mess after the "incident": tables had been knocked over and someone's cigarette burnt a nice piece of furniture. Miss Blacklock lets Craddock know that she had met Rudi before at the Royal Spa Hotel. She and Miss Bunner had been lunching...
