Summary
Chapter one opens with a detailed description of the events of April 20, 1999. It had been a typical day for Sue Klebold who had been working in her downtown Denver office. It wasn’t until she received an urgent message from her husband Tom, that the chaos of the day began to unfold. Sue called her husband back but between Tom’s stressed tone and the static phone connection, Sue only heard a scramble of words including “gunman…shooter…school” (3). Immediately Sue knew that the situation involved her youngest son, Dylan, as her eldest, Byron, had been at work. Frantic, Tom continued to explain to the best of his ability: Dylan’s friend Nate had called Tom’s home office minutes earlier to ask if Dylan had been home.
