Summary
In Part 3, Chapter 3, Irene and Bachhuber drive on. Titch, overcome with grief, has chosen not to continue with them. At one point, Irene and Bachhuber have an encounter with an Aboriginal man, Lochy Peterson, who is of Aboriginal descent. After a brief exchange, Irene and Bachhuber drive on. In Chapter 4, Irene and Bacchuber stop briefly to perform repairs on the car. Irene feels a sense of sexual tension beginning to grow between them, but Irene resolves to resist it.
In Chapter 5, Dunstan meets with Irene and Bachhuber at a checkpoint. He threatens to slander Irene in the press if she does not immediately commit to opening a dealership with general Motors. Irene tells Dunstan to leave. In Chapter 6, Irene and Bachhuber are at a checkpoint one night. Lochy Peterson and his friend—an older man referred to only as Doctor Battery...
