Summary
In Part III, “Returns and Roots,” Chapter 9, in 1948, in order to repay Neruda for helping him “emigrate to Chile,” Victor volunteered to hide him and his wife at their home (191). However, the couple was soon taken away for their Communist affiliations.
When Marcel was 10, he received a letter from Carme. Although he was disinterested “in the news,” Roser and Victor were elated (196). They traveled to Andorra to reunite with Carme.
Carme told her family her story. Although she had tried to go off and die, she had survived. A dog and a peasant couple had saved her. She still had the dog, Gosset.
The Dalmaus returned to Chile without Carme. Although she stayed in her homeland and continued teaching, over the following months, “she grew more distant from the past” (202). She eventually emigrated to Chile. Meanwhile, Victor worked as a cardiologist...
