Summary
In Chapter 7, in 1940, Victor completed his medical studies at the university (142). Felipe introduced him to Salvador Allende, “cofounder of the Socialist Party” (142). Allende helped Victor secure his courses at the School of Medicine. The men later developed a connection over chess.
Through Victor’s night job bartending, he met Jordi Moline, “a Catalan widower” who “owned a shoe factory” (144). The two eventually decided to open a tavern together. They named it the Winnipeg.
Victor and Roser developed a close sibling-like relationship. Although devoted to Roser, Victor still thought about Ofelia. Victor and Roser had decided to stay together until Marcel was 18. While Roser’s focus and determination helped her survive life’s obstacles, Victor “was often overwhelmed by sad memories” (146).
