Summary
In Part II, “Exile, Loves, and Misunderstandings,” Chapter 5, Victor spent several months of 1939 in the Argeles-sur-Mer concentration camp. Hearing nothing from Aitor, he worried about Carme and Roser. Meanwhile, he worked “with a small team of doctors and nurses” (102). Finally, in April, Aitor visited. He told Victor Roser was “living in Perpignan with a family” (104). He planned to leave Europe, promising to buy boat tickets for Victor and Roser.
Victor’s fate felt out of his control. His “homeland was lost” and “there was no hope of returning” (105).
