Summary

Chapter 4.1 shifts ahead a few more years. Jude, Willem, JB, and Malcolm are now in their early forties. Jude attends the funeral of a former math professor of his, and he thinks about his own interest in math. Jude is not in close contact with JB anymore, and the only friend whom Jude sees even semi-regularly is Willem. Jude was never able to forgive JB for the insults. JB entered rehabilitation and is now sober. Jude misses seeing JB, but Jude never actively tries to contact him. One day, Jude and Willem have dinner together before Willem leaves the country. Willem will be out of the country for an extended period of time, as he is playing Odysseus in film adaptations of The Iliad and The Odyssey.
