Summary
Chapter 2.2 is narrated by Harold in the first person. The narration is addressed, in a somewhat abstract manner, to Willem. When Jude first introduced Harold to Willem, JB, and Malcolm, they were in their mid-twenties, and Harold was in his mid-forties. Harold was impressed by Jude and Willem’s bond, as Willem was so attentive and nurturing towards Jude. In narration, Harold reveals that Julia is his second wife. His first wife was a woman named Liesl. Liesl was a doctor. They had a son together, whom they named Jacob, but Jacob unfortunately died quite young due to medical issues. Harold and Liesl were devastated, and they later divorced. Harold later married Julia. As a law professor, Harold was quite impressed with Jude’s performance as a student. He took on Jude as a research assistant, and they soon became good friends.
