Summary
In Chapter 19, Torode showed Hawthorne a copy of a check that Abbott had tried to cash that morning written to him by Charles for 20,000 pounds. Torode suggested that Abbott tied Charles up and left his right hand free so he could sign the check. He said he had not arrested Abbott yet because the evidence was circumstantial. He said he hoped Hawthorne had some information that could help, but Hawthorne claimed Torode was a step ahead of him.
When Torode left, Horowitz asked Hawthorne if he thought Torode was right about Abbott. Horowitz hoped Torode was not right because it would mean there was not a book in what had happened. He begged Hawthorne to tell him that he had another killer in mind. Hawthorne claimed he did not have any good idea who had committed the murder if it was not Abbott...
