Summary

In Chapter 1, Anthony “Tony” Horowitz, the author and narrator of A Line to Kill, has been invited by his editor, Graham Lucas, to come to the office of Penguin Random House to talk about publicity for his next book. Graham asks that Daniel Hawthorne, the detective about whom Horowitz writes, to come as well.

Horowitz met with Hawthorne to instruct him to come to the meeting at 11 a.m. He explained that Hawthorne would be expected to help with publicity for the book and attend literary festivals. Hawthorne promised to come to the meeting, but he was 30 minutes late. When Hawthorne arrived, he claimed Horowitz had given him the wrong time because he never got an appointment wrong.
