Body
The body on the beach is symbolic of danger. Throughout Arman's time in Virginia, he has been attempting to reestablish some semblance of normalcy. Although he has yet to heal from his trauma, Arman is beginning to feel more at peace until the morning he discovers John Doe dead on the sand. The presence of and the mystery surrounding the body grants the narrative a tense and ominous atmosphere, and convinces Arman that his life is in danger.
Sea Breeze Motel
The Sea Breeze Motel is symbolic of redemption. After receiving his special immigrant visa, Arman finds a job working for Mr. Peters at the Sea Breeze Motel. This setting grants Arman the semblance of balance. It also allows Arman to believe in the possibility of a new life. Even after Mr. Peters dies, the motel remains significant to Arman.
