Summary
The unnamed narrator related a childhood memory of his cousin, Manshu. The narrator recalled how when he was eight, 14-year-old Manshu would bully him and his friends instead of making friends his own age. He related how he did not like Manshu and that his parents would also say negative things about him. However, it was important for them to be kind to Manshu as he was part of the family. He was related to the narrator’s aunt’s husband and the narrator states that “we had to show him the respect due to a family that takes a daughter away” (Location 637). When Manshu is 16, his mother dies and the narrator noticed a change in him, that he had become meek and kinder.
