Chapters 16-19 Summary
In chapter 16, Abbie struggles to overcome the grief of losing her son. Abbie's grief turns to resentment as she begins to think of all the things she has given up to be with Will. Eventually, however, Abbie's love for Will and their children begins to bring her out of her depression and anger. Abbie has been teaching the children at home, but a school has recently opened near the farm and Abbie agrees to allow them to attend. A few years later, Abbie gives birth to another girl, Isabelle. All around them the town has grown bigger, but the crops are still poor and Abbie is still struggling with her choices.
