Summary

In Chapter 19, there is no reason for James to remain in town, but he does not make arrangements to leave. He is soon overrun with invitations to various events. One day, a woman and her daughter seek respite from the “mild spring day” at his house, forcing James to leave by the back door. He has always been the source of some interest but cannot figure out this “fervor” until Lady Radcliffe reveals the rumor that he is actively seeking a wife. When Lady Radcliffe says Lady Kingsbury is the source, James remembers seeing Kitty talking to Lady Kingsbury and knows what happened. When Lady Radcliffe realizes he is not looking for a wife, she asks if he has “returned to us.” She means literally the people of town but is also referring to the family. James is aware he has avoided crowds...
