Summary
In Chapter 12, James calls on Kitty. He accuses her of avarice. She counters, saying she is being practical and has not lied about her situation. James counters, saying she lied about her parents. He knows that Kitty's mother and Dorothy were consorts in their youth. Kitty's father fell in love with Kitty's mother and left London in shame in order to marry her. James says Kitty's father revealed this to Charles Linfield's father, which is why Charles called off their engagement. James will not tell anyone as long as Kitty leaves Archie alone. He says she can target someone else. Kitty threatens to elope with Archie. She feels sure James will not spread the scandalous story once she is married to his brother. To her surprise, James laughs. She offers tea, making him laugh again. When she returns, James says he clearly underestimated...
