New Orleans is the most populous city in the state of Louisiana. The entirety of the novel takes place in New Orleans, although in different areas and in different time periods. New Orleans is a highly diverse city in terms of race and culture, and it has a historically high African-American population. The novel examines three generations of the same family. Every character lives in New Orleans, but the three storylines take place in the 1940s, the 1980s, and the 2010s, each examining the social and economic conditions of the city in those time periods.
