Paris
Mathieu and the other members of the Resistance are based in Paris and use the common features of the city -- such as subways, cafés, et cetera -- to conduct their missions in what is essentially plain sight. At the time the novel takes place, in 1941, Paris and the rest of France is Occupied by the Germans, which has the effect that, for Parisians, they are effectively conducting their normal lives with the dark, ominous cloud of German presence hanging over them. Some of the most intrusive elements of the German Occupation include: the rationing of food, an enforced curfew each night, and essentially free reign for any German officer to hassle or arrest a French citizen.
