Summary
On May 17, Mathieu reaches out to S. Kolb to arrange a meeting with Edouard, and that afternoon meets with Edouard at a "grand," "crumbling" hotel (127). Edouard now offers Mathieu $35,000, which he accepts, and Edouard immediately assigns him his first mission -- which, ironically, will involve smuggling two operatives into the country. Mathieu immediately regrets his decision.
On May 19, Broehm walks into his new office in Paris and discusses how his investigation will proceed with Madame Passot, a "lifelong civil servant" (132). The next day, Broehm visits a French prison and gently talks with Louis Roche, a French civilian who is now serving a sentence for his own Resistance activity.
