Summary
On April 12, a group of Polish fighter pilots is suddenly called into action from the field, just north of London, where they tensely wait on such calls. In the chaotic aerial battle, one of the pilots, Sergeant Jan Kalisz, successfully shoots down a German plane for the 10th time in the war. However, a final, desperate shot from the German plane punctures his fuel tank, and as his plane shuts down, Kalisz prepares his parachute to eject.
On April 14, Mathieu is at a Parisian café to meet a new potential recruit into the Resistance, a young, aristocratic woman they will call Annemarie. In their short conversation, Annemarie references her family's centuries-long French heritage as reason to stand up against the Occupation.
