Hill House
Hill House is the primary setting for the novel. It is an ancient mansion situated in a remote location in upstate New York. Holly first happens upon the house while out for an impromptu drive. She is immediately taken by the house's towering structure. It grants her both a feeling of excitement and terror. She soon becomes convinced that the abandoned setting will be the perfect place for her and her friends to work on their ongoing theatrical project.
Holly and her girlfriend Nisa use a portion of Holly's grant money to rent out Hill House for two weeks. Their friends Stevie and Amanda join them here. Although all of the characters want to see Hill House as the proverbial land of opportunity, they struggle to ignore the house's haunting atmosphere.
