Holly Sherwin
Holly Sherwin is the main character of the novel. The majority of the novel is also written from Holly’s first person point of view. Holly is a playwright and an English teacher. At the start of the novel, she and her girlfriend Nisa Macari are spending a holiday in upstate New York to get some time away from the city. While here, Holly takes an impromptu drive into the countryside and discovers the haunted and alluring Hill House mansion. Holly has recently “received a grant for a new play,” which she sees as “the first sign of hope in decades” (9). She sees Hill House as the perfect location to work on the play and to bring her artistic dreams to life.
