The microscope slide is a symbol of Bernard’s anger and strength. Shayla is not happy when she is paired with Bernard in lab. She already does not like him because she thinks he is mean. He yelled at her in the second grade and snatched a toy from her. In the present, when Bernard snaps a microscope slide in half, she believes that is a sign of how strong he is and how dangerous he could be if he was angered.

The video is a symbol of false assurance. Shayla believes because there is a video of the Black man walking toward his truck away from the White female officer, it is proof that the Black man did nothing wrong.
