Summary
Chapter 6 takes place in 1939 on the day the Prime Minister of England at that time, Neville Chamberlain, declared the country to be at war against Germany. Teddy didn't hear the declaration made over the radio because he was out for a walk with Harry, the Shawcross' dog.
Teddy was twenty-five years old when he thought of proposing to Nancy. He thought that later, when they had children, Nancy could tell them that their father proposed to her the day the war broke out. Nancy was, at the time, completing her PhD in a specific mathematical topic. He knew marrying Nancy was inevitable, since her mother called them childhood sweethearts, but he also knew that he loved her.
