The Narrator (Unnamed)
The narrator and main character of A Girl Returned is a 13-year-old girl who was adopted as an infant and is now being returned to her birth parents. She is kind, thoughtful, and a very well behaved child. She cares for others and is keen to look after her family members. She can think of no reason why she would be sent back, other than her adoptive mother's illness or the possibility that her birth parents wanted her back. She is determined to be good and to take care of her adoptive mother, she merely wants to return to the parents and life she has always known. The narrator is not used to doing the degree of work and household chores that are expected of her in her new family.
